About

Ontario Eastern Route MapThe Ontario Eastern is a 20 mile long shortline railroad running from Ogdensburg, New York to De Kalb Junction, NY and connecting to CSX Transportation.

Founded in August of 1981, the OE took control of the former NYC line between DeKalb Junction and Ogdensburg on December 1, 1981. Operations began on December 10th.

Traffic continued to slump on the line, a pattern carried over from the days of Conrail ownership. 1985 saw the end closure of the paper mill in Ogdensburg, the last remaining on-line customer of the ONER. In 1986, the parent company of the OE filed for abandonment of the line.

A private group of investors stepped in at the 11th hour and purchased the operating name of Ontario Eastern and the line at scrap value. Up until abandonment, the OE used the reporting marks of ONER. Under new ownership, the OE uses OERC and ONER.

In the late 1980’s the line saw new business come on line as a business park was created by the Town of Ogdensburg.

During the booming 1990’s a transload facility was opened at the Ogdensburg Regional Airport allowing for rail traffic to be offloaded to truck or even air. Proximity to the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Ogdensburg International Bridge makes this transload facility a great launching point into Canada.
